Monday's novel study exam prompt:
A DYNAMIC character is a major character in a work of fiction who encounters conflict and is changed by it. Dynamic characters tend to be more fully developed and described than flat, or static, characters who do not change.
A number of elements in fiction reveal a character, making the character dynamic, including descriptions of a character, the character's dialogue, a character's responses to the conflicts that arise in the plot, and a character's thoughts.
Prove that your main character (or characters) are DYNAMIC characters.
How does your main character (or characters) change for better or worse over the course of the novel?
To answer this question, support it with three examples of using themes that prove the character changes. This is a MELCON, but your E (evidence) is not quoted. Instead, refer to the page number and a brief summary of what happens on that page to tie in the specific theme to prove it motivates your character to become dynamic / to CHANGE.
In simpler terms your MELCON paragraphs will look like this:
M: defendable claim/main idea on how your character is proven to change throughout the course of the novel.
E: Transition, Topic Sentence, Identify the Theme Being Discussed, Page Number, Summary of Event.
L: How that THEME/EVENT proves that the character is dynamic/changes over the course of the novel. What this THEME SAYS about your character and why he/she changes.
(repeat two more times)
Con: Restate your main idea in a new way, summarize key points, and effectively conclude your writing.
The last section of the exam will ask you to list any "burning" questions you still have in regards to the novel (plot, character, word choice, author purpose, etc.). If you have zero questions - you can skip that step. You also then have to provide anywhere from 1-5 "favorite quotes/passages" your found in your book to jot down. If for some reason you have more than 5 favorites - I won't stop you! :)
Good luck - and I will see you a week from today!!
